TabTimes – Randy Nunez, the Technical Expert for Mobile Computing Technologies at Ford, had some interesting observations in his blog this week about the growth in tablet adoption and the evolution of how they’re being used. You may have read some of Nunez insights earlier this month in the coverage of TabTimes Tablet Strategy conference where he was one of the speakers.

“One of the mind-blowing things is how quickly media tablets have progressed from the consumer market to the corporate ranks. Just a year ago media tablets were soft of a novelty or a status symbol,” Nunez says in the post.

He notes one of the big changes is the evolution of the media tablet from a consumption-centric device to a content creation device. “Granted, it probably won’t replace every creation tool in your arsenal, but I’m not sure it has to,” he says.

As for competitors to the iPad, Nunez isn’t sure which vendor will step up. Android’s been hurt by fragmentation and RIM’s BlackBerry PlayBook has, as he generously states, had a lukewarm reception.

Windows 8 is the big wildcard, but Nunez says Microsoft can’t rely strictly on its enterprise expertise to be successful:

“IT organizations can no longer wait around for technologies to become rock-solid, enterprise-ready solutions. We need to start early, with the consumer trends, or risk becoming the ‘Party of No’, or worse, irrelevant.”

Reuters – Shares of Facebook traded as high as $45, near the price of $50 that would keep many retail investors from placing a typical “round lot” order of 100 shares, because the total cost will be $5,000 – considered a threshold for many investors.

By the end of regular trading on Friday, however, the stock closed at $38.23, just 23 cents, or 0.6 percent, above its initial public offering price.

An order for less than 100 shares is called an odd lot. Two decades ago, this was a forgotten corner of the retail marketplace that accounted for less than 1 percent of trades. But odd lots may account for almost a quarter of trading now, according to one sampling of 120 securities provided for academic research.

Orders can be placed for any number of shares, but odd lots are not reported or displayed on a consolidated feed of all stock transactions. This lapse calls into question whether all market activity is accurately reflected, raising issues of transparency regarding price discovery.

The surge in odd-lot trading has been driven by the higher cost of round lots in such popular stocks as Apple Inc, Google Inc and Priceline.com, and their increased use by high-frequency traders in information-gathering strategies that many institutional investors find abusive.

For example, a high-frequency trader may “ping” 10 trading venues with a sell order of 20 shares each. If five orders execute, the trader may deduce a large buyer is present. The trader will then cover the other five orders, buy shares in the market in front of the large buyer and then sell that stock to the buyer at a slightly higher price.

One trader at an asset management firm said he suspected the main reason high-frequency traders transact in odd lots is to assess buy and sell imbalances in the market without taking on too much risk or leaving a footprint in the public stock feed.

Because “any increase in average trade size won’t benefit the high-frequency trading model, the HFT community probably does not want too much attention on the increase in odd-lot trading,” said the trader, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Maureen O’Hara, a Cornell University professor who is an expert on market microstructure, does not believe trading in odd lots is abusive, but said it does raise issues of fairness.

“More than half of all the trades in Google are never reported on a tape that is publicly available. That’s pretty appalling in my view,” O’Hara said. “The fact that so many trades are odd lots means that somebody should be reporting these trades in a way that the market can see them.”

MINI-OPTIONS FOR POPULAR HIGH-PRICED STOCKS

High stock prices have raised another issue among investors who trade in odd lots: the inability to hedge their holdings with stock options on less than 100 shares. NYSE Arca and the International Stock Exchange have proposed “mini-options” that would represent 10 shares of a stock, instead of a round lot.

Both NYSE Arca and ISE selected Apple, Google, Amazon.com and SPDR Gold Shares, an exchange-traded fund, for their mini-option proposals in April to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

NYSE Arca also picked SPDR Standard & Poor’s 500, an ETF that reflects the S&P 500 index, while ISE chose International Business Machines Corp and Priceline.com.

The SPDR S&P 500 ETF, at about $130, trades at the lowest price of the seven securities, while Google and Priceline trade at more than $600 a share.

TD Ameritrade, a brokerage unit of TD Ameritrade Holding Corp, said odd lots account for at least 69 percent of trading of the securities proposed for the mini-options.

Certain popular stocks trade at prices beyond the reach of the typical retail investor, said TD Ameritrade in a letter to the SEC about NYSE Arca’s and ISE’s proposals.

When prices increase above $50 there is a corresponding increase in the amount of odd lots that trades, the firm said.

Computerworld – In late 2009, Microsoft struck a deal with European Union (EU) antitrust regulators that required the company to display a screen in Windows providing download links to other browsers, including Mozilla’s Firefox, Google’s Chrome and Opera Software’s Opera.

The settlement specifically called out future editions of Windows.

“For Windows Client PC Operating Systems after Windows 7, the Choice Screen update will first be made available at the general commercial release date of such an operating system and remain in place for distribution … for the entire duration of these Commitments,” the document stated.

According to the final agreement (download PDF), the deal has a five-year lifespan — meaning it will expire in late 2014 — and broadly defined “Windows” and “Internet Explorer” to include “successors” of the then-current Windows 7 and IE8.

Microsoft presented the first official features of Windows 8, which is a new idea after 25 years, a new way to see things. After Mozilla already stated that the progress in creating a new version of Firefox for Windows 8, the shocked came when Microsoft explained their intentions that specially for ARM-based devices, to limit user choice for browsers, so the only browser allowed to run in Windows Classic to be Internet Explorer, locking out any third-party options. Windows Classic is one of the environments, and also Metro is available which allows other browsers to run in the system. Mozilla started to claim the right that there should be no technical limitation that can prevent apps to run in Classic mode as well, if we imagine that they already made the plan of business and marketing for the new Windows 8.

(What to do if you forgot Windows 7 password?)

Microsoft declined to comment when asked whether it believed it’s required to offer a ballot screen in Windows 8 to European users for selecting rival browsers in the new operating system’s desktop mode.

Source: http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9226787/Mozilla_ponders_major_Firefox_UI_refresh

Mozilla is working on a revamp of Firefox to synchronize its various versions — desktop, tablet, phone and Windows 8 Metro — into a single visual style, according to documents posted by members of its user interface (UI) design team.

The project, which does not have a name, and the earlier blending of Mozilla’s mobile and desktop design groups, is meant to bring more coherence to the various versions of the open-source browser.

“One of our major goals for the year [is] getting Firefox to feel more like one product — more ‘Firefoxy’ — across all our platforms, desktop to tablet to phone,” Madhava Enro of the Mozilla UI design team, said in a post to his personal blog yesterday.

Enro posted a slideshow he and others used the week before to present their proposals at a company get-together. According to the presentation, some UI elements will be shared across all Firefox editions, among them a lean toward “softer texture” and smoother curves in the design.

By the looks of it, Firefox on the desktop will change most dramatically. The mock-up of the new UI, dubbed “Australis,” does not show the orange Firefox menu in Windows, an element which first popped up in Firefox 4 more than a year ago at the last major UI redesign. The tab condensed most commands formerly on the traditional Windows menu into a single-click destination.

Australis is even more streamlined than the current Firefox UI, a move consistent with the trend toward minimalist designs as evidenced by rival Chrome’s long-time look, and the changes Microsoft made last year to Internet Explorer 9 (IE9).

Also part of the project is the UI of the new Metro version of Firefox on Windows 8, the operating system upgrade Microsoft will likely launch later this year. Third-party browsers can be built to install both a traditional browser for Windows 8′s desktop, and a Metro edition for the touch-enabled, tile-style side of the new OS, without the latter having to go through Microsoft’s app store.

Mozilla has been working on a Firefox Metro app for months, and the most recent status update reported that the still-internal build had added Start page pinning, a Metro feature that lets users “pin” favorite sites as individual tiles on the page. Clicking on a pinned site tile loads the website, even if the default browser, in this case Firefox, is not yet open or active.

Google has also committed to developing a Metro version of Chrome for Windows 8, putting the top three browsers on a collision course for share on the new operating system, and pride of place on the devices, including tablets, that will rely on it or its second cousin, Windows RT.

Some Firefox UI elements will land on the desktop long before the redesign is in place: Firefox 13, set to ship June 5, will include a revamped “new tab” page that lets users select from recently- and frequently-viewed sites when they create a new tab.

Chrome and IE9, among other browsers, currently include have a similar feature.

Mozilla has not set a timetable for mutating its current UI into the new designs, although in a year-long planning document published previously, the refresh is listed under the goals for the second half of 2012.

Past UI changes to Firefox have raised the hackles of some users. In 2009, Mozilla said it would “ribbonize” the then-under-construction Firefox 3.7, to reduce clutter and mimic the upcoming Windows 7′s look and feel.

Mozilla quickly clarified its position, saying its proposal had been “worded kind of poorly.” In the end, Firefox 3.7 never appeared — it instead became Firefox 4 — and the changes, although substantial, did not include a Microsoft-esque ribbon.

Here is a question asked in Yahoo Answers:

Q: I’ve had my computer for about a year and 5 months, a Dell Inspiron 1750. Yesterday I turned on my computer and Windows loaded fine. I tried to open mozilla firefox and it completely froze, leaving me with an arrow when I hovered over my desktop and a “waiting” circle on my bottom toolbar. I turned it off manually and turned it back on and now all it does is say “windows is loading files” and will go to the normal windows 7 login screen, but it’s all stretched, the arrow is bigger than normal, and no login or option to enter my password comes up. I’ve used F8 numerous times on other computers and I can always get to restore it that way, but on my computer it sends me to a blue screen “diagnostic test” and says that the hard drive failed the test. I don’t believe this was a virus or anything because my computer was scanning the night before and didn’t find anything, I believe it was just doing what computers do which is stop working on you when you least expect it.

I don’t know if I should spend the money to replace my hard drive on this 1.5 year old computer and risk something else breaking on it in the near future since I do use it everyday OR if I should buy a brand new computer that is cheap (around $500) but not a piece of junk.

Here are two answers to the question from Yahoo members:

A1: If it was me, I’d download a decent Linux, or Rescatux or one of the other rescue type programs, and boot that. Use the Disk Utility program that comes with Linux to thoroughly test the hard drive. If it finds any problems, backup all your data somewhere and then try reinstalling Windows (yuck, I know) from either a restore partition on the HD or backup disks (you made them, right?) and all will be back to new condition. If the rest of your HD is OK. Option B is to install the Linux you downloaded in place of Windows and learn to use that. If your HD test shows many errors, time for a new HD; you can install Windows from your install disk MAYBE, and activate it using the number on the sticker on the case. (Or, in half an hour, you could have Linux running on it.)

A2: If the windows recovery diagnostic test reported that your hard drive has failed, then it probably has.

You should get another hard drive. There is no reason to buy a new computer. Just get any 3.5in sata drive and plug it in and you’re good to go.
However, you won’t have an operating system any more; you would have to either buy Windows again (bad), or burn or buy recovery disks for the insperon 1750.

Hard drive broken can be a serious problem as  forgot Windows password if the data is not backed up. If you have any opinions about this question, please leave a comment.

From http://www.itproportal.com/2012/04/20/what-will-windows-8-enterprise-offer/

Microsoft has just announced three new versions of Windows 8, one of them being the Enterprise edition. Although the standard, Pro and RT versions were thoroughly detailed, the last one was only mentioned by its name.

That mistake was quickly repaired, where developers wrote a separate post about Windows 8 Enterprise. It appears that this will be a version that will not be aimed at mainstream customers and will fully integrate Software Assurance benefits, besides all the features found in Win 8 Pro.

In addition, Enterprise will include premium features that will help in mobile productivity, security, manageability and virtualisation. One of them is Windows To Go, a fully manageable version of the standard Windows 8 client that it’s installed on a bootable USB disk. This can be used by companies to supply a working copy of the operating system, to all its employees.

The OS will also come with Direct Access, a modern take on VPN functionality, which allows remote users to access network resources with ease.

This can be successfully paired with Branch Cache, a feature that targets corporations and allows common or server computers to access cached files (documents, websites, etc.) from the inner-network, without having to download the content again from the Internet.

Enterprise also has the means of managing user permissions, by blacklisting or whitelisting certain files on the computer. Application side-loading is also permitted, with users having the possibility of running Metro-style software without checking by the Windows 8 Store.

Q: I got software to recover RAR password, but several days later it still does not find the password. The RAR password recovery tools say they could not find the password. What is wrong?

A: There are generally three reasons for the failure of RAR password recovery:

Reason 1. The password is too strong.
Any password can be cracked theoretically, if you can spend enough time on RAR password recovery. But in fact, most people cannot stand spending a week or more time on it.

So, to quickly retrieve RAR password at that situation, RAR Password Unlocker employs leading CPU and GPU acceleration to help you run password recovery process much faster.

Reason 2. Mask settings are incorrect.

If you know some characteristics of the password, including length, uppercase, lowercase, numbers, symbols, prefix and suffix, please make correct settings in Brute-force with Mask attacks of RAR Password Unlocker; otherwise, you will hardly recover RAR password.

Reason 3. The RAR file is encrypted in a special way.

There are two encryption ways not supported by most RAR password recovery software:

Method 1. Set password in other languages

Most password recovery tools cannot recover RAR password in non-English letters. So take care of the password once you set it.

Method 2. Set different passwords for files in one RAR archive

In general, RAR password recovery tools only work on one password-protected file in a RAR archive. If you compress many files together in one RAR archive, and then give them different passwords as below steps, only one password can be recovered.

1. Prepare the important file (A.xlsx) you want to encrypt and an insignificant file (B.xlsx).

2. Compress and encrypt B.xlsx. (Note: Do not encrypt file names.)

3. Open the B.rar file, click “Commands” in file menu and choose “Add files to archive”.

4. Add A.xlsx, and go back to Archive name and parameters.

5.In “Advanced” tab, set a different password. Click “OK”, and close the RAR file.

Then you can use RAR password recovery tools to recover its password. Software will only find password for B.xlsx, thus only B.xlsx will be opened; to extract A.xlsx, you have to input the correct password by yourself. In this way, the data in A.xlsx can be securely protected. And that is the reason why you cannot recover password for A.xlsx.

In the three reasons, only the second one can be corrected on your own. If you cannot recover RAR password, check which reason it is to save your time.

Different from Windows 7 administrator password, Personal Identification Number or PIN is used in Windows 8 as the same way you use in ATM. It is a four digit number, through which you can sign in to your account. The PIN logon is similar to PIN in credit cards and other bank accounts. It allows you to set up Windows 8 login password at the most four digits. This password protection option has been added to Windows 8 for tablet users to enter code via touch-numpad, but PC users can also create PIN to logon to Windows 8 using either Windows Live account username and password or PIN code.

If you would like to specify a PIN for logon for your account instead of a password, please follow the steps below after installing the developer preview version of Windows 8.

Step 1. On the default Metro style home window, click Control Panel.

Step 2. Select Users from main navigation bar and click Create a PIN on left side of the Window.

Step 3.You’ll be prompted for the password of your current account. Enter the logon password and click on OK button.

Step 4. Enter the four digit PIN and also retype the PIN to confirm it. Click on “Finish” to end your operation.

That is all! Your PIN is now set up for PIN logon to Windows 8 and you can start using it next time to login to Windows 8 account. You will see Logon Options link on Windows 8 Logon Screen, which lets you switch between configured logon options. Here, you can choose PIN Logon Credential Provider option to logon to Windows via PIN code.
